Hamish ponders at this as he stares up at the women. She had red hair similar to that of his sister, however, she seemed alot bigger and more fiercer. He wasn’t sure what to say to her and his blue eyes glanced up at him. He stared for a minute than he knew what he should do.  He took out his wooden sword and poked her with it.

“What’s wrong?” she asked her brother’s, noticing the sudden change in mood. She looked around, seeing if there was something that spooked them. Her arms enclosed a bit more protectively around them. “If somethin’ scared ye, ye need not fear; I’ll keep ye safe.” she smiled.

As they clung for fear, their sister noticed what was going on and asked them what happened. She glanced around for their sake and put her arms around each of them. She reassured them that they would be safe. Harris and Hubert both snuggled closer to her, knowing they could trust her. Hamish, on the otherhand, was still trying to find out if he and his brothers were hearing things or if they were imagining things. He turned to them and shrugged. He turned around to face Angus and wondered if the Clydesdale had noticed anything but so far, Angus was walking as if nothing bothered him.  He then had an idea.

He turned to his brothers and with a few signaling, mischevious smiles, and mouthing words, they decided that they want to ride Angus through the highlands, a wee bit faster.  Hamish then explained to Merida, mouthing and using his hands, motioning her pulling the reigns and imitated her doing so and then pretended to act our as if he was pacing although he was sitting but with his arms turning like wheels, he tried to tell his sister that they should go faster. This would probably help them get over the heebee jeebies that they were having in the Highlands.

Merida smiled as Harris and Hubert snuggled closer to her. However, her attention was then focused on Hamish as he signaled to her. It took her a minute, but she nodded as she understood. “Faster it is then.” she said, re-positioning her hands on the reigns.

Giving the reigns a slight crack, as well as squeezing the horse’s sides with her legs, she urged Angus to go faster. The Clydesdale took the hint, and picked up his speed. Both Merida and Angus kept the speed safe for the wee ones, but yet fast enough to get them out of this area of the Highlands.

As they rode faster into the highlands, Hamish giggled as they past by several trees, although they were the same looking but he was enjoying the view. He thought he was something ahead but wasn’t sure as he squinted. His brothers eagerly stopped snuggling against their sister and gazed around, they all made sounds of “wee” and “whoosh” as they rode onward, the wind blasting their faces. Their curls bounced along as Angus took them towards a brighter area of the Highlands.

They came to a large green lawn where there were more trees but Angus seemed to have slowed down. Hamish and his brothers all started to listening to their surroundings. Their ears getting wider as they heard another sound but this time, the sound was not that of creepy animal but a rushing sound. Hamish glanced at his brothers and asked if they knew anything. They kept listening and Hubert motioned that it might be somebody moving something. Harris shook his head. Hamish kept thinking as the two both motioned different things. He knew what it was as he turned to his sister. He told Merida what he thought it was starting wiggling in his fingers in a “it’s going to rain” motion but instead of making rain-like motions, he moved down as if it were faster than rain water to tell her that it was a possible waterfall.  If the waterfall was nearby, this could be exciting!

Hamish was still shocked that she didn’t know who she was. He tried not shaking his head at her but looked back at the family portrait to her. This couldn’t be. It was his mother. How could have he not known? This was too weird yet cool. Then again, would she ever keep their secrets if she was her older self? Hamish didn’t know. She seemed confused as he did and he realized something must of have happened to her but what? He had to tell his brothers but not now.

Choosing to hide what he knew, he took Elinor’s hand, made her stand in front of the potrait of where she was with her family members, and then opened the door to see if the secret passage was there. It was! Then he looked at her and waved his tiny swords. He waited for her to follow him into the passage as it was dimly-lit by castle’s torches hung on the stony walls. The stony stairs awaiting them.

He gestured his wooden sword as if to say, “Ladies first,” to her although he knew it was more of, “Mother’s first.” but he tried not to think of that way. Still if she was his mother, how did she get so…young? What happened to his mother?

Elinor blinked curiously at the shocked little lad before she began twiddling with her fingers. “Uhmmm…is…is somethin’ wrong?” she inquired, but paused as he once again took her hand. Now standing before the unfamiliar portrait, she gingerly set her fingers against it. “How odd…” It seemed so strange to find this new painting. How could she not have known this was here?

Broken from her thoughts, she stepped back with surprise as the portrait opened up and revealed a dimly-lit passage. “What on Earth?! How did ye know this was ‘ere?” He then hopped up in the tunnel and gestured for her to follow. Though she hesitated at first, the teen gave an uncertain nod as she began to climb in. “Alright…if ye insist…”

Hamish ignored Elinor as she reacted surprised and wondered if he and his brothers should explain the way to tell her that she was his mother but felt that it’d be awkward and then his brothers would feel like he betrayed them. He didn’t want it to happen. He found himself inside the tunnel but saw that it wasn’t close. He quickly rushed past his mother and closed the tunnel, making sure nobody else, was around. He then ran in front of her, and pointed his sword as if to say, “Let’s go forward!” and his tiny feet skittered across the dusty floor.  He made sure to wait for Elinor to catch him up as he took his steps.  The flames flickered alongside them as they went deeper into the tunnel. He paused when they were half-way in the tunnel to what seemed to be at symbols depicted on the stony wall sand pointed to Elinor to make sure she knew what he was indicating to. He wasn’t sure but there might of been a message. One of the symbols looked like a bear but he wasn’t quite sure about the other figure. He wondered if she knew. This would just be a little detour before they had reached the stables to where Angus and his brothers were waiting for them.

“A wee bit excited, aren’t ye, Hamish?” she smiled with a small giggle, noticing his day-dreaming. With that, she placed Harris and Hubert on Angus as well. Merida then hopped on the horse herself behind her brothers. She reached her arms around them, taking hold of the reins. Her arms created quite a barrier, hopefully one that would keep them safe.

“Alright, Angus. Let’s get going.” she said, gently squeezing the horse’s sides with her legs. Angus nodded, and started off. His pace was steady, slightly fast, but yet steady and smooth enough to be safe for the wee lads.

Hamish nodded as his sister asked him if he was excited. Once his brothers were on the back of Angus, Merida took control over the Clydesdale and told him to go, and they were off once Merida did so. They headed out of the stables and into the cool air of the castle grounds to which the Triplets looked around them, in awe.  Hamish could feel the cool wind blow his curls but he beamed. It was a pleasant day outside and the sun was hovering of them, filling with rays. Today’s horseback riding with Angus was going to not only fun but also enjoyable.

Hubert giggled and Hamish turned to see Maudie, the castle’s servant, attending to  helping one of the other castle’s servants who was working on the grounds.

They licked their lips at the sight of her holding an empty tray that had no cookies. Still they imagined the sweets would be there but when she saw them, she frowned at them, her hands on her hips. The Triplets all grinned mischievously at each other and blew raspberries at her.  They giggled as they whizzed by and started heading further and further away from the reaches of the Castle Dunbroch.

Merida closed her eyes for a brief second as they started off, taking in a deep breath of the Highland air. The warm sun warmed her face, while the cool breeze kept the heat from being unbearable. As she opened her eyes again, she giggled as her brothers teased Maudie. “Lads, leave the poor lass be. Ye torture her enough, with all o’ yer shinanagains….” she said, her tone playful though holding some truth.

As they rode further and further away, she readjusted her grip on the reigns. “Is this speed alright? Is it too fast, too slow….?” she asked her brothers, an eyebrow raised in question.

They had rode away from the castle when Merida asked her brothers. They all glanced at each other and all agreed, they were alright. They nodded. Hubert gave her a thumbs up meaning the speed that they were going at an okay speed.  They were now reaching to what seemed to be a shadowy, forest-like area with trees. The triplets started glancing around now, their blue eyes widening.

Hamish thought he heard the sound of a bird squawking and then Harris was clinging his tiny fingers to his brothers.  Hubert giggled at this and poked him. Harris then jumped, causing Hubert and Harris to laugh, that is until, they heard a weird, sound of footsteps. The triplets glanced around to find the source of the noise but so far, there was nothing in plain sight.  So what and/or who made that noise? Something was creepy about this part of the Highlands…something they don’t remember coming to a long time ago…why now?

“What’s wrong?” she asked her brother’s, noticing the sudden change in mood. She looked around, seeing if there was something that spooked them. Her arms enclosed a bit more protectively around them. “If somethin’ scared ye, ye need not fear; I’ll keep ye safe.” she smiled.

Shaking her head with a smile, she sighed and picked Hamish up. “Seems yer the only one who’s willin’ ta listen ta me.” she smiled, gently pecking him on the forehead before setting him on Angus’s back. “Hold on ta the reigns, okay?” she instructed him with a smile, before placing her hands on her hips as she awaited for the other triplets to notice…they couldn’t get up unless she helped them.

“Lads….perhaps ye want some help…..?”

As Hamish was placed on Angus’ back, Merida had complimented him saying he was the only one listening. He would of mocked her but instead nodded, smiling innocently at her comment.  She kissed him on the cheek before instructing him to hold on the reigns. He mimed handling of the reign and pretending to be Merida as he made noises as if Angus should take him on the ride.  Angus, however, just glanced back at him, and stared at him, then shaking his head as if he understood, who it was, he turned back to the front, not really caring about Hamish’s reigns on him. Hamish kept imagining, he was holding on the reigns of Angus as they rode throughout the Scottish Highlands. Whoosh! There they go! They jumped over a wooden log, then next they happen to hit some trees but Hamish ducked his head, and told Angus to keep moving forward, then zoom! They were met with small blue wisps that were in front of them, glancing at it curiously, he motioned for Angus to follow after the wisp but Angus, seeing them, seemed frightened.  Come on, Angus! He thought as he did so.  He held the reigns and started to instruct Angus when a loud neigh interrupted him and his daydream.

He came face to face with a wary-looking Angus face him as if to say, “What do you think that you’re doing?”  Hamish realized he wasn’t in the Highlands but still in the stables with his brothers and his sister. Right. He heard two giggling sounds and turned to see his sister and brothers staring at him. He saw that they now placing their arms up for their sister to place them on Angus’ back. Hamish’s tiny cheeks turned somewhat red and stopped imagining things as he just sat there, trying to remain clueless.

“A wee bit excited, aren’t ye, Hamish?” she smiled with a small giggle, noticing his day-dreaming. With that, she placed Harris and Hubert on Angus as well.
